MUSINGS:

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.  Theodore Roosevelt

Happy spring!  Depending on the part of the country you are in, spring has already bloomed or it is in full force.  As I am coming out of hibernation, nature is there to guide me and reflect the beauty of the world in full Technicolor.

The qualities of spring - growth, creativity, blossoming - are often so engaging and reflective of my enthusiasm after a long winter’s “nap.”  This enthusiasm is sometimes pure expression, joyful and inspired; at an extreme, it shows up as that human condition of full-speed ahead, must-finish-project (perfectly) syndrome, and living into tomorrow…My excitement wanes and I end up feeling like I am a to-doing list (you know what I mean?)

I recently saw the movie, “You Can Heal Your Life” with Louise Hay and friends and took away two statements that resonated strongly with me; start where you are and always ask how you can serve.  “Start where you are” is such a simple message and powerful reminder that we do not have to have it all figured out.  Let me reiterate, we do not have to have it all figured out.  The 57 paces ahead of where we are in our minds can wait until we reach the 56th, the solid plan of execution can have some breathing room.  Ahhhh.  Have a vision, yes, and take a step from where we are today.

The other message, “how you can serve” inspires that overarching perspective of the ways we can make a positive difference on a daily basis.  Whether it is in our work, our parenting, or in the small acts of kindness, like smiling to the woman who cleans the bathroom sinks at the YMCA.  We have so many ways we can offer the gifts of the human heart and be of service.

During the pre-spring thaw, and mostly unbeknownst to my conscious mind, I have been digging deep into the ways I can serve most joyfully and authentically.  (It is a continuous excavation process.)  The incubation process is as important as the expression, just as the seeds need to experience the earth and root before they bloom.  My thesis advisor taught me this.  Now, with the presence of spring, the sprouting and blooming is taking place and thanks to the wisdom of Louise Hay, I am reminded to take my endeavors out into the world from where I am today, one step at a time.

INVITATIONS:

DO – Serve

Ask yourself how you can serve today.  Get out and off of your own to-do list and help another in some way that feels right to you.  It can be a small gesture or that big action you have been waiting to initiate.  Do not worry if it “makes sense” or is “practical” – just start from where you are today.

EMBODY – Your Heart

2 – Minute exercise: Place your hands on your heart and breathe.  Soften your face, relax your hands, and bring your awareness to the rhythm of your heart.  Now, listen.  What does your heart say?  Trust the word(s), images, impulses.  It is a very wise part of your being.
